Natural Toxicants, why they are unnoticed?
Natural toxicants including carcinogens, often go unnoticed as a consumer concern and are of only moderate concern to the industry and the FDA .
One reason why these remain unnoticed is that the media do not focus on this area, and the laws deal only with hazards created by food additives, not with hazards naturally associated with foods.
The other is the consumer belief , that natural foods couldn't possibly cause any problems.
There are risks that appear to consumers as both old and familiar and therefore without any shock value.
In actuality , natural toxicants can be hazardous, especially if the diet is distorted by excessive consumption of certain foods or the omission of foods that provide essential nutrients.
Even though government , industry , consumers, and consumer activities have different degrees of concern for the various issues that comprise food safety, these various segment can and must work together to ensure that our food supply is and remains safe.
The fact that these various and often antagonistic segment have different perspectives creates the crucially needed checks and balances that can maintain our food supply as the safest possible.
